How it works
- Answer a few questions: your nationality, age, type of residence permit, Dutch diploma and, if needed, when your obligation started and which route you have.
- See your likely result and the exams that usually belong to it.
- Check your own requirements in Mijn Inburgering, then start practising.
Possible results
No exams required
For some people, integration is not required. Examples are people with an EU, EEA or Swiss nationality, people under 18 or over pension age, people who live here only temporarily for work or study, and people with certain Dutch diplomas. Whether this applies to you depends on your situation; check Mijn Inburgering or ask DUO.
Inburgeringsdiploma for a stronger residence permit
You may want a stronger residence permit even if you do not have to integrate. For this you first need the inburgeringsdiploma. Exemptions are possible in some cases. Which exams and level apply depends on your situation; check Mijn Inburgering, DUO and the IND.
A2 for naturalisation
To become Dutch, you first need the inburgeringsexamen at level A2, or the state exam Dutch as a second language (Nt2) at B1 or B2. An exemption from integration is not always enough for naturalisation. Ask your gemeente.
A2 (Wet inburgering 2013)
Did your obligation start before 1 January 2022? Then you fall under the old law. You take the language exams at A2 or higher, plus knowledge exams. Mijn Inburgering shows which exams you need.
Z-route (A1)
The Z-route is for people who must integrate and for whom the B1 route or the education route is too hard. You learn Dutch at A1. Language exams at A2 are allowed but not required. You must do the participation statement (PVT) and the Module Labour Market & Participation (MAP). You finish with a talk at the gemeente. Your PIP shows what applies to you.
B1 route
You do the language exams at B1 (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking), the KNM exam, the participation statement (PVT) and the Module Labour Market & Participation (MAP). Your PIP and Mijn Inburgering show which exams.
B1 route, downscaled to A2
Have you had at least 600 hours of Dutch lessons and B1 does not work out? Talk to your gemeente about whether A2 is possible. Only the gemeente decides.
Education route (B1 or B2)
This route is mainly for young people who want to study at MBO, HBO or university. You do the language exams at B1 or B2, plus PVT and the KNM exam. Check your PIP with your gemeente.

Which law applies to me?
If you had to integrate from 1 January 2022, the Wet inburgering 2021 applies. Before that date, the Wet inburgering 2013 applies.
Who decides my route?

How long do I have?
Usually 3 years. Mijn Inburgering shows your start date and what you need to do.
Can I integrate voluntarily?
Yes, for example to naturalise or to get a stronger residence permit.
